Welcome to Xavier - A Ferret Abroad's CD Fund Site
Xavier - A Ferret Abroad is a non-profit, grant-making group headquartered on Facebook. The group came about as a result of a severe outbreak of Canine Distemper in the UK in Fall, 2011. A group of ferret enthusiasts from around the globe banded together to begin raising funds to help a ferret shelter there recover from the after-effects of canine distemper leaving them with a huge veterinary bill.
One of the unique ideas that came out of that effort was the idea of a traveling plush ferret that would raise funds by accepting a donation for a visit. The funds raised would then be given to the UK shelter. Rolling forward one year later after a major reorganization, the group began fund-raising in earnest. The idea expanded to having several plush ferrets visiting donors in several countries simultaneously. The Xavier ferret canine distemper fund was thus born. While we no longer host "traveling ferrets" the spirit of international cooperation and support lives on in our grant programs and fund-raising efforts. |
All proceeds from item sales, auctions and donations to the fund are used to provide emergency medical grants to any ferret shelter in the world stricken by canine distemper (CD). The fund also supports ferret shelters in providing CD vaccinations to help in prevention. While outbreaks are fortunately rare due to quarantines and improved vaccines, they still can occur in even the best managed shelter. In addition to the devastating emotional drain of dealing with an outbreak and its impact on a shelter, the financial implications can be catastrophic. The Xavier CD Shelter Fund is designed to help shelters survive the financial crisis while providing immediate, emergency funds to combat the disease and reduce the potential loss of life.
All donations made to the fund are administered by the Ferret Association of Connecticut, Inc. - a 501(c)3 non-profit, charitable humane shelter. Funds are maintained separately for the sole purpose of providing Canine Distemper Emergency and Vaccination Grants.
